Should Dubai Brands Use AI-Generated Ads or Real Shoots?

Should Dubai Brands Use AI-Generated Ads or Real Shoots?

Dubai brands should use real shoots, not AI-generated ads, for any ad that shows people, products, food or real places, and keep AI for storyboards, subtitles, resizing and translation drafts. In the UAE, audiences want authenticity and regulators are watching AI imagery closely, so a human-led shoot with AI-assisted editing protects both trust and budget.

Why Are Brands Facing a Backlash Against AI-Generated Ads in 2026?

Brands face a backlash against AI-generated ads in 2026 because consumers like them far less than marketers assume. An IAB study found that 82 percent of US ad executives believe younger consumers feel positive about AI-generated ads, while only 45 percent of Gen Z and Millennial consumers actually do. Neuroscience research also links AI ads to weaker memory.

The perception gap is growing, not closing. According to the IAB's January 2026 report, The AI Ad Gap Widens, the gap between executives and consumers rose from 32 points in 2024 to 37 points in 2026. The study surveyed 505 US Gen Z and Millennial consumers and 104 US ad executives between October 2025 and January 2026. Gen Z is the most sceptical group: 39 percent feel negative about AI ads, nearly double the 20 percent of Millennials.

The effect goes beyond stated opinion. In a 2024 study by NIQ (formerly NielsenIQ), more than 2,000 participants watched AI-generated ads, and about 150 had their brain activity measured with EEG. Viewers spotted most of the AI ads on their own and described them as more annoying, boring and confusing than traditional ads. Even AI ads rated as high quality produced weaker memory activation, and NIQ warned of a negative halo that can spill onto the brand itself.

High-profile campaigns have made the debate public. Coca-Cola's AI-made holiday films drew a second round of criticism for missing the spirit of the holidays, and "AI slop" is now a common comment under brand posts. AI slop is the term audiences use for low-effort, mass-produced AI content that feels generic or slightly wrong.

Do UAE Rules Restrict AI-Generated Advertising Content?

UAE rules restrict some AI-generated advertising content. In late September 2026, the National Media Authority warned that using AI to create images or videos of national symbols or public figures without prior official approval violates the UAE's media content standards. No general AI-labelling rule for ads was found, but AI imagery in UAE marketing now carries real compliance risk.

The warning was reported independently by Khaleej Times and Gulf News, and both describe the same requirement: prior official approval for AI depictions of national symbols and public figures. The authority's message was blunt: not everything that can be generated is permitted. For Dubai brands, that rules out the quick AI shortcut of placing a leader, a national emblem or a recognisable public figure into festive or National Day creative.

The wider policy direction points the same way. The UAE Charter for the Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence lists transparency and human oversight among its 12 principles. It stresses the irreplaceable value of human judgement over AI. The charter is a set of principles rather than an advertising regulation, but it signals what UAE institutions expect from businesses that use AI publicly.

Existing rules still apply to every ad, however it is made. On-camera creators need a UAE Advertiser Permit under Federal Decree-Law No. 55 of 2023, a requirement covered in how much social media content production costs in Dubai. AI does not remove that obligation for any real person who appears in the content.

Where Does AI Help in Ad Production, and Where Does It Hurt?

AI helps Dubai ad production most in behind-the-scenes tasks: concept testing, storyboards, rough cuts, subtitles, resizing for each platform and first-draft translations. AI hurts most in anything an audience is asked to trust, such as faces, real people, food, products, real Dubai locations and Arabic text, where small errors look fake and damage credibility.

The decision table below summarises where each approach fits by content type:

Content typeAI-generated visualsRecommended approach
Storyboards, moodboards, concept testsLow risk, fast and cheapUse AI freely, internal only
Subtitles, resizing, cutdowns, translation draftsLow risk with human reviewAI-assisted, checked by an editor
Abstract backgrounds, motion graphics, texturesModerate riskAI acceptable if on brand
Product shots, packaging, food and drinksHigh risk: labels, textures and colours distortReal shoot
People, faces, staff and customersHigh risk: uncanny faces, consent issuesReal shoot with real people
Real Dubai locations and venuesHigh risk: invented or wrong detailsReal shoot, with permits
National symbols, public figuresNeeds prior official approvalAvoid AI depictions

The pattern is simple. AI is a production tool, not a substitute for the subject. Product imagery is a good example: shoppers judge colour, texture and scale from photos, and the case for real photography is covered in how much product photography costs in Dubai.

Arabic content is where generic AI output fails most visibly. Image and video generators often render Arabic script as broken or reversed letterforms. AI-written Arabic copy frequently reads as stiff Modern Standard Arabic rather than the Gulf tone a Dubai audience expects. Bilingual brands should treat AI translations as drafts for a native speaker, never as final copy.

How Much Does an AI-Generated Campaign Cost Compared With a Real Shoot in Dubai?

An AI-generated campaign in Dubai usually costs less in cash, often AED 2,000 to AED 6,000 a month for editing time and software, while a real shoot day costs AED 7,000 to AED 20,000. The real shoot usually delivers better value per usable asset, because one well-planned day produces video, stills and cutdowns that audiences trust and remember.

The comparison below shows typical monthly costs for roughly eight short videos plus stills:

ApproachWhat it includesTypical AED per monthBest for
AI-generated onlyGenerated clips and images, editor time, tool subscriptionsAED 2,000 to AED 6,000Internal concepts, abstract filler
Hybrid: one shoot day plus AI-assisted editingDirected shoot, 6 to 8 Reels, photo selects, AI-assisted subtitles and resizingAED 8,000 to AED 15,000Most Dubai SMEs posting weekly
Full production retainerTwo shoot days, 12 to 16 Reels, stills, bilingual versionsAED 15,000 to AED 35,000Hospitality, F&B, retail and real estate brands posting daily

These ranges reflect the production rates set out in CoArt Studio's published content production pricing and typical Dubai market rates checked in October 2026, excluding VAT, talent fees, usage rights and ad spend. Talent, multiple locations and Arabic plus English versions move a project from the low end to the high end.

A worked example shows why cash cost misleads. Take a Dubai cafe with a hybrid budget of AED 12,000 for one shoot day. The day yields eight Reels, 40 edited stills and 16 Story cutdowns, or 64 usable assets at about AED 190 each. An AI-only month at AED 4,000 might yield 30 assets at about AED 130 each. Those AI assets cannot show the real food, staff or venue, and the NIQ findings suggest they are remembered less. Longer brand films follow different economics, set out in how much a corporate or brand video costs in Dubai.

Why Do Real Shoots Perform Better for Dubai Brands on Social Media?

Real shoots perform better for Dubai brands on social media because recognisable people, places and products give audiences a reason to trust, share and return. On Instagram and TikTok, content that feels local and human earns direct-message shares and watch time, while AI-made visuals are often spotted quickly and scrolled past as generic.

Hannah Finch, Head of Content at CoArt Studio, sees the same mistake in many Dubai briefs: brands try AI visuals to save a shoot day, then spend weeks fixing hands, labels and Arabic text, and finally book the shoot anyway. Her rule of thumb is to decide early which assets must be real. Faces, food, products and the venue almost always qualify. AI is then planned into the edit for subtitles, resizing and versioning, not into the frame.

Human-led content can produce measurable results. In CoArt Studio's own client work, content for a Dubai hospitality and F&B client reached nearly 215,000 Instagram views in 90 days, with 51 percent of views coming from non-followers. That figure is CoArt Studio's own reported result, not an independent industry benchmark.

Real shoots also feed seasonal campaigns. National Day, Dubai Shopping Festival and New Year content works best with genuine staff, customers and recognisable Dubai settings, as covered in how Dubai brands should plan DSF and festive season content. The same footage can then be reused across a social media management retainer for weeks.

How Should a Dubai Brand Brief a Shoot That Feeds a Month of Content?

A Dubai brand should brief a content shoot by agreeing goals, content pillars, hooks and a shot list before the crew is booked, then grouping scenes by location and wardrobe. A well-briefed shoot day in Dubai can supply a full month of Reels, stills and Story cutdowns, with AI used afterwards for subtitles and resizing.

A practical briefing checklist:

  1. Set one business goal for the month, such as bookings, store visits or enquiries.
  2. Choose three or four content pillars, for example product, people, behind the scenes and customer questions.
  3. Write 8 to 12 hooks, meaning the opening line or image that stops the scroll in the first two seconds.
  4. List which assets must be real (faces, food, products, venue) and which tasks AI may assist (subtitles, resizing, cutdowns).
  5. Confirm locations, filming permits and Advertiser Permits for any on-camera creators.
  6. Plan Arabic and English versions, with a native speaker reviewing any AI translation draft.
  7. Capture b-roll, meaning supporting footage without dialogue, for future ads and edits.
  8. Schedule edits across four weeks and review performance at the end of the month.

How Should Dubai Brands Disclose AI Use in Ads?

Dubai brands should disclose AI use in ads whenever AI creates or materially changes a person, product, place or claim the audience might take as real. A short line such as "Visuals created with AI" in the caption or on screen is usually enough. Disclosure costs little, and the IAB found it rarely hurts purchase intent among younger US consumers.

The IAB study reported that 73 percent of Gen Z and Millennial respondents said knowing an ad was made with AI would either increase their likelihood to buy or make no difference. The same report found that 89 percent of advertisers using generative AI for ads disclose it at least sometimes, but fewer than half always do. Consistent disclosure is therefore a simple way to stand apart.

Basic disclosure practice for UAE brands:

  • Label generated people and scenes: say so in the caption or on screen.
  • Use platform tools: Instagram, Facebook and TikTok offer AI labels for altered or generated media.
  • Never fake evidence: no AI-generated customers, reviews, results or product performance.
  • Avoid restricted subjects: no AI depictions of national symbols or public figures without approval.
  • Keep records: note which tools and prompts produced each asset in case questions arise.

How Can a Dubai Brand Plan a Human-First Content Shoot?

A Dubai brand can plan a human-first content shoot by starting with a short discovery call that sets goals, platforms, languages and budget. From there, a studio can recommend a one-off shoot, a hybrid month or a retainer, and show exactly where AI will save time without replacing real people, products and places.

At CoArt Studio, a human-first Dubai studio, real strategists, directors, photographers and editors plan and shoot every campaign, using AI as a tool for speed, never as a substitute for creative judgement. CoArt Studio delivers social media management, content production, videography, photography and branding, in English and Arabic. Book a discovery call to plan a shoot that feeds a month of content, with a clear AED quote.
